Saenghwang Bangatgan is an arts organization rooted in traditional arts, connecting East Asia’s musical heritage with contemporary creative practice. It began in 2019 with 〈Saenghwang Bangatgan〉, a project centered on the traditional wind instrument saenghwang, and has since developed a wide range of performances, exhibitions, workshops, and international exchanges without being confined by instrument, genre, or form. Guided by the question, “How can intangible values be reinterpreted in a contemporary context rather than remain fixed as heritage?”, the organization explores and realizes shared values through a collaborative network of artists across Asia.
In 2025, Saenghwang Bangatgan signed a permanent exhibition agreement with the Musée de la musique at the Philharmonie de Paris. In the same year, it presented 〈Neo-Tradition〉, a collaborative creation and production project involving Korea, Japan, and China, and 〈Syn-asia〉, a performance exploring points of connection through Goryeoak (高麗樂), music transmitted from the Korean Peninsula to Japan. In 2024, the organization launched the 〈Resonating Space〉 series, exploring the relationship between physical and auditory space. The following year, beginning with 〈Saenghwang Bangatgan in Taipei〉, this ongoing collaboration led to performances and exhibitions connecting Seoul, Busan, and Keelung, Taiwan. Other projects include the immersive sound concert 〈MOMOM: Body–Mind〉 (2023) and the exhibition and performance 〈Saenghwang Bangatgan: Saenghwang Sanjo〉, presented at Alternative Space LOOP in 2021, which recontextualized traditional music through collaboration with contemporary artists. The process behind the project was documented in 〈Saenghwang Sanjo Documentary: Wood, People, Breath〉. In 2019, the organization also produced the performance and music video 〈Take One’s Eyes Off〉, exploring the identity of traditional instruments.
Led by Artistic Director and Producer Jisu Han, Saenghwang Bangatgan carries out projects through close creative partnerships with artists across Asia. Its collaborators include Japanese shō player Otonashi Fumiya, composer Chatori Shimizu, Taiwanese sheng player Li-chin Li, and Chinese sheng player Zhang Meng—artists whose practices span both traditional and contemporary music. Depending on the project, these collaborations extend to creators from diverse fields, including architecture, choreography, and directing. Through partnerships with institutions and organizations such as Liquid Sound, Moa Moa Production, the Shanghai Conservatory of Music, and Tokyo University of the Arts, Saenghwang Bangatgan continues to evolve into a platform that extends beyond the conventional boundaries of an arts organization.
