생황방앗간은 전통예술을 기반으로 동아시아의 음악적 유산과 현대적 창작을 잇는 예술단체이다. 2019년 전통 관악기 생황을 매개로 한 작업 〈생황방앗간〉에서 출발하여 악기와 장르, 형식을 제한하지 않고 다양한 공연과 전시, 워크숍, 국제교류의 장을 펼쳐나가고 있다. "고정된 유산이 아닌 무형의 가치를 어떻게 현대에 동시대적으로 환원할 것인가?"라는 질문을 바탕으로 아시아 각국 창작자들과의 글로벌 협력 네트워크를 통해 공동 창·제작을 전개하며 공통의 가치를 탐구하고 실현한다.

2025년 유럽 최대 음악 기관 프랑스 필하모니 드 파리(Philharmonie de Paris) 음악 박물관과 상설 전시 계약을 체결하며 한국 전통 기반 콘텐츠의 독보적인 국제적 공신력을 입증한 바 있다. 같은 해에 한반도 전래 음악인 고려악(高麗樂)의 접점을 찾는 공연 〈Syn-asia〉와 한·일·중 공동 창제작 프로젝트 〈Neo-Tradition〉를 개최하였다. 2024년 대만 아티스트들과 물리적·청각적 공간의 관계를 탐구한 〈공명하는 공간〉시리즈는 2025년 〈생황방앗간 in Taipei〉로 이어졌으며, 이후 지속적인 협력을 통해 서울, 부산, 대만 지룽을 잇는 공연 및 전시를 진행하였다. 이 밖에도 이머시브 사운드 콘서트 〈MOMOM:몸맘〉(2023)을 기획·제작하였고, 2021년 대안공간 루프에서 〈생황방앗간: 생황산조〉라는 이름으로 전통음악의 재맥락화와 동시대 작가들과의 협업을 이끌어내었다. 2019년에는 전통악기의 정체성을 탐구하는 〈시선을 거둔 후〉공연 및 뮤직비디오를 제작하였다.

생황방앗간은 예술감독이자 기획자인 한지수를 필두로 다양한 아시아의 창작자들과 긴밀한 창작 파트너십을 맺고 글로벌 프로젝트를 수행한다. 일본의 쇼(shō) 연주자이자 가가쿠 예술가인 Otonashi Fumiya와 작곡가 Chatori Shimizu, 대만의 생(sheng) 연주자 Li-chin Li, 중국의 생 연주자 Zhang Meng, 몽골의 마두금 연주자 Munhkjin Purevhu부터 한국의 거문고 연주자 박다울, 타악 연주자 권효창, 거문고 연주자 심은용, 사운드 아티스트 송영남, 콘트라베이스 연주자 동이, 첼리스트 이호찬 등 아시아 전역에서 활발하게 활동하고 있는 전통과 현대를 아우르는 예술가들과 함께해오고 있다. 이러한 글로벌 네트워크는 전통예술가에 그치지 않고 건축가부터 안무가, 연출가 등 다양한 분야의 창작자들도 아우른다. 건축가 이병엽과 연출가 이인보, 역사학자 전덕재, 음향 전문가 김영선, 비평가 신예슬, 애니메이터 이해강, 안무가 정서윤 등과 협력을 이어온 바 있다. 나아가 리퀴드사운드, 모아모아프로덕션, 상해음악원, 도쿄예술대학 등 유수 기관과의 협력을 바탕으로 예술단체 그 이상의 플랫폼으로 거듭나고 있다. 

Saenghwang Bangatgan is an arts organization rooted in traditional arts, dedicated to bridging East Asia’s musical heritage with contemporary creation. Originating in 2019 from the project Saenghwang Bangatgan—which centered on the traditional wind instrument saenghwang—the group has since expanded its horizons across various performances, exhibitions, workshops, and international exchanges, transcending the boundaries of instruments, genres, and forms. Driven by the core question, "How can intangible values be restored as contemporary legacies rather than remaining fixed in the past?", Saenghwang Bangatgan explores and realizes shared values through global collaborative networks and co-productions with creators across Asia.

In 2025, the group solidified its international prestige by signing a permanent exhibition contract with the Musée de la Musique at the Philharmonie de Paris, Europe’s leading music institution. In the same year, they presented 〈Syn-asia〉, a performance exploring the intersections of Goryeo-ak (ancient Korean music), and 〈Neo-Tradition〉, a trilateral co-production project between Korea, Japan, and China.

Their 〈Resonating Space〉 series (2024), which investigated the relationship between physical and auditory spaces with Taiwanese artists, evolved into 〈Saenghwang Bangatgan in Taipei〉 in 2025. This led to a series of sustained collaborations, resulting in performances and exhibitions connecting Seoul, Busan, and Keelung. Other notable works include the immersive sound concert 〈MOMOM〉 (2023), and 〈Saenghwang Bangatgan: Saenghwang Sanjo〉 (2021) at Alternative Space LOOP, which recontextualized traditional music through collaborations with contemporary artists. Their journey began in 2019 with 〈After Closing One's Eyes〉, a performance and music video exploring the identity of traditional instruments.

Led by Artistic Director and Curator Jisoo Han, Saenghwang Bangatgan maintains close creative partnerships with diverse Asian creators to execute global projects. The collective features a wide array of artists spanning tradition and modernity: Fumiya Otonashi (shō player and Gagaku artist) and composer Chatori Shimizu from Japan; Li-chin Li from Taiwan; Zhang Meng from China; Munkhjin Purevhu (morin khuur player) from Mongolia; and from Korea, Da-ul Park (geomungo), Hyo-chang Kwon (percussion), Eun-young Shim (geomungo), Young-nam Song (sound artist), Dong-yi (contrabass), and cellist Ho-chan Lee.

This global network extends beyond musicians to include architects, choreographers, and directors, such as architect Byeong-yeob Lee, director In-bo Lee, historian Deok-jae Jeon, sound expert Young-sun Kim, critic Ye-seul Shin, animator Hae-gang Lee, and choreographer Seo-yoon Jung. Furthermore, through partnerships with prestigious institutions such as PGVIS (Thailand), Liquid Sound, Moa Moa Production, Shanghai Conservatory of Music, Tokyo University of the Arts, and Senzoku Gakuen College of Music, Saenghwang Bangatgan is evolving into a comprehensive platform that transcends the definition of a conventional arts group.
